So, I became a Dad last week, and what an awesome experience. But having some time at home to reflect on everything, the experience didn’t start and finish in the hospital on the 9th of May… oh no, it started about 7 months ago, when my super romantic wife told we were having a baby in the middle of a food court. Needless to say I was ecstatic and bursting with excitement.

In the early months, we spent a lot of time talking and planning colour choices, names, hair styles, morals, outfits… the list went on and on. It took me about 2 months to work up the courage to walk into a Baby Bunting store, credit card in hand, ready to set the world on fire.

Believe me, the world of baby accessories baby monitors, prams, cots, high chairs and all things cute and cuddly can be a little daunting the first time, but I made it out alive.

After our shopping frenzy, I tallied the grand total of what we had purchased, everything from comforters, prams, bibs, wraps, the stroller… the works. Over $7000 in baby stuff, all of course worthwhile to ensure the comfort and safety of our little treasure.

After setting up the baby’s room and washing all the clothes and sterilising all the bottles, it dawned on me.

We spent a lot of money ensuring we could wash, dry, sterilise the bottles and comforters, and even when purchasing a washing machine we made sure it had a ‘medic baby’ cycle to ensure every thing our little treasure came into contact with was clean, fresh and safe.

All of this seemed good and well and fairly ‘normal’ for new parents, but we didn’t think of everything.

What about the quality of the air in our house???

Having clean clothes and sterile bottles is great, but if the air in our home is not clean, we were only looking at half the picture.

So what’s the best gift to a newborn baby?

Clean air.

The health of our baby boy is paramount, so investing in a really great quality air purifier was essential and lucky for me, I am fortunate enough to work for an air purifier company.

To think of all the air borne allergens, mould spores and dust that would find themselves very happily at home in my son’s lungs, is not something I wish to entertain.

So I have now got a great little Ionmax air purifier in his bedroom, but figured because he spent time with us in the lounge room, I grabbed a larger Ionic air purifier to ensure that space has clean, crisp, healthy air for our baby boy.

And as we go into the colder months, I’ll also be getting a humidifier to ensure we avoid the sore eyes and dry throats as a result of our central heating… a healthy baby is a happy baby after all.

An air purifier helps to clean and filter the air of dust, hair, dander, as well as airborne allergens and harmful chemicals.

Babies and small children still lack a fully developed immune or respiratory system, so an air purifier is especially useful to them to help them breathe better as well as prevent future respiratory problems such as asthma.

By having an air purifier in your home and in the baby’s room, you are preventing any harmful contaminants, bacteria and other impurities in the air from being breathed in by you or your baby.

Things to consider when buying an air purifier for your baby:

Size of the room – Check the coverage area offered by the air purifier and choose depending on the size of the room it will be used in.

Noise level – If the air purifier will be used in the baby’s bedroom, make sure that it has minimal noise level.

Filters – HEPA filters are essential to efficiently filter out harmful bacteria, pollen and mould from the air.

Negative Ions – Especially useful to clean and revitalise the air. Ionic air purifiers are also extremely easy to maintain.

Our popular air purifiers listed below are perfect for babies. Quiet operation, incredibly easy to use and highly efficient, they are great for large areas such as the living room as well as smaller rooms such as the nursery.

Drink driving is a major issue in Australia, contributing to approximately 27% of fatal crashes in the country. Drink driving trends have continued to worsen over the years, and the recent rumour that drinking light beer of any quantity allows patrons to stay below the legal limit to drive has become another cause for concern.

This is not true. Light beer still contains alcohol and will not ensure that your BAC remains below .05.

The Victoria Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) addressed this issue in their latest newsletter, warning that “drinking an alcoholic beverage of any strength will increase the amount of alcohol in the blood system”.

Driver education on alcohol and its effects on the body is so important now more than ever yet surprising as drink driving has long been a problem in Australia.

Your BAC (short for blood alcohol content / concentration) starts to rise as soon as you start drinking, and it can take 30 minutes up to 2 hours after you have stopped drinking for your BAC to reach its highest concentration.

There is no safe way to guess your BAC other than by using a BAC tester such as a breathalyser.

Alcohol affects everyone differently and your BAC is highly dependent on various factors including weight, liver function, health, number of drinks, gender, and previous meals.

For further information, you can read our articles on Breathalyser FAQs and What is a Standard Drink.

Make sure you test your own BAC with a breathalyser before you go behind the wheel.

Light beer can still push you over the legal driving limit. It still has alcohol in it so drinking over a longer period of time will still push you above 0.05.

Quality fuel cell breathalysers will be able to tell you your BAC accurately and quickly so that you can make an informed decision before you drive.

Get a quality AlcoSense Volt or AlcoSense Stealth personal breathalyser - these provide accurate, alcohol-specific 3 decimal point BAC readings. Test yourself at least ½ hour after your last drink but before you drive.

Make sure your passengers are safe.

Make sure your family is safe.

Make sure you are safe.

Channel Ten News recently did a news story on the Mobileye as a new driver safety technology. The Channel Ten news team got to see the Mobileye in action during the demo given by Michael Hirsh (from Mobileye) at our headquarters in Vermont.

Mobileye, dubbed as the “third eye on the road” provides drivers with life-saving alerts as it continually scans the road ahead for potential dangers and can detect vehicles, lanes, pedestrians and cyclists.

The Mobileye is already gaining national recognition as an advanced driver awareness system for road safety and driver safety, as it’s already being used by UNSW researchers in Australia’s largest road safety study on driver behaviour.

Perfected after years of heavy research and development, Mobileye’s driver awareness technology has been adopted as a standard safety feature by leading automotive manufacturers including Volvo, BMW and General Motors. The Mobileye is also used by various companies worldwide to reduce road accidents and improve driver behaviour in their fleet.

Coca Cola Hellenic, one of the world’s largest bottlers of products of the Coca-Cola company, has been using Mobileye technology as its fleet safety program for the past few years and even won the International Fleet Safety of the Year award in 2010. Mr. Kis, the Fleet Support Manager at Coca Cola Hellenic selected Mobileye’s systems after a 19 week pilot with outstanding outcomes, including zero crashes, improved driver behaviour and substantial savings in gasoline.

A transcript of the video is included below:

Once the domain of luxury cars, everyday motorists can now access a high-tech safety system to keep them on the straight and narrow.

Road safety experts say its the next step in helping to lower the nation’s road toll.

Intelligent and intuitive, the system dubbed “the third eye” can help save lives.

A camera attached to a computer and a dash display to alert the driver if they leave a lane without indicating or when they’re too close to the car in front or if they fail to see a pedestrian.

“At the rate of 15 frames per second, our processor with our algorithms is evaluating what is happening,” said Michael Hirsh from Mobileye.

Developed by an Israeli company, the device can be retrofitted to cars and road accident experts believe it could have a significant impact on the road toll.

In the first three months of this year, 316 people died on Australian roads, a lapse in concentration a major factor.

“Possibly as high as 50-60% of crashes could have distraction or inattention as a contributing factor,” said Assoc Professor David Logan from Monash University.

“It doesn’t take much at all for the most simple mistake to end as tragedy,” said Inspector David Griffin from Victoria Police.

The device is also proving critical in gaining a better understanding of driver behaviour. It’s being used in an Australian first study for the University of New South Wales.

“All this technology does not eliminate the responsibility of drivers and operators to pay attention,” Inspector Griffin added.

The smart device can cost up to $1700.

Mobileye is the only comprehensive Advanced Driver Awareness System available in Australia for aftermarket installation. It offers crucial alerts to all drivers, helping to improve driving habits and improve driver behaviour using visual and audio alerts without being a distraction in the car.

Mobileye addresses one of the primary causes of vehicle accidents – driver inattention.

Consisting of an intelligent camera system that utilises vehicle, lane and pedestrian detection technologies, the Mobileye measures the distance to other vehicles, lane markings and pedestrians. It provides drivers with important and often life-saving visual and audio alerts to help them avoid a collision before it happens. By providing real-time feedback to the driver, the Mobileye continually reinforces good driving behaviour and helps reduce the risk of collision.

A major study on driver distraction conducted by the Monash University Accident Research Centre and Monash Injury Research Institute have come up with data that should push Australians to rethink their time behind the wheel: driver distraction causes more car crashes than alcohol or drugs.

The study analysed 340 serious casualty crashes in Victoria and NSW between 2000 and 2011 using data from the forensic examination of crash scenes and anonymous interviews with drivers. It did not include collisions caused by speed and focused exclusively on crashes caused by inattention in an attempt to know more about why drivers stop concentrating. The researchers found that distraction caused 16% of crashes.

The biggest source of distraction for drivers was found to be a passenger inside the vehicle – interactions between drivers and passengers caused 5.1% of crashes studied. This could include talking, arguing, misbehaving, crying, or otherwise seeking the driver’s attention.

Other large and increasingly common causes of distraction-related crashes included in-vehicle technology such as GPS devices and mobile phones. Other types of driver inattention such as intoxication, sleep, fatigue and illness were found to have caused 37% of the studied crashes.

The study also predicted based on current trends that technology-related driver distraction would claim 50 lives and cause 954 serious injuries on Victorian roads between this year and 2017.

With younger inexperienced drivers being one of the major risk groups when it comes to distracted driving, parents and driving schools need to look further into deterring driver distractions rather than tightening legislations to punish it.

Interestingly, Professor Stevenson who led the research said that the best way to limit distraction-related crashes could be through even more technology:

‘The traditional way for much of road safety has been to legislate and enforce but in relation to some of the in-vehicle distractions being introduced, there may be a technological solution as well and I think we need to start paying more attention to that.

New technology such as the Mobileye might be the answer. Mobileye is the only comprehensive Advanced Driver Awareness System currently available for aftermarket installation in Australia, and is already being used by UNSW researchers in Australia’s largest road safety study on driver behaviour.

Mobileye offers key road and driver safety features to all drivers, helping to improve driving habits and improve driver behaviour using visual and audio alerts without being a distraction in the car.

Perfected after years of heavy research and development, Mobileye’s driver awareness technology has been adopted as a standard safety feature by leading automotive manufacturers including Volvo, BMW and General Motors.

Coca Cola Hellenic, one of the world’s largest bottlers of products of the Coca-Cola company, uses Mobileye technology as its fleet safety program and even won the International Fleet Safety of the Year award in 2010. Mr. Kis, the Fleet Support Manager at Coca Cola Hellenic selected Mobileye’s systems after a 19 week pilot with outstanding outcomes, including zero crashes, improved driver behaviour and substantial savings in gasoline.

The Mobileye system addresses one of the primary causes of vehicle accidents – driver inattention.

In light of recent research and findings on the increasing prevalence of driver distraction and its link to crashes, there is an even greater need for a safety device such as the Mobileye.

Breathalysers may soon be able to test for drugs, based on research findings that illegal drugs can be detected in the breath.

Researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden successfully identified a range of 12 substances in the breath of 40 patients. These patients had taken drugs in the previous 24 hours and were recovering in a drug addiction emergency clinic in Stockholm.

The researchers used just a simple, commercially available breathalyser to do the research, and also took down patients’ history of drug use, and analysed the samples using liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry.

While drug testing methods have traditionally been restricted to blood, urine and saliva samples, exhaled breath is now being seen as a promising alternative that is not only easier to collect and non-invasive, but also less prone to adulteration and can be used anywhere.

The breath samples were analysed for 12 substances:

Alprazolam and benzoylecgonine were detected in exhaled breath for the first time, whereas for methadone, amphetamine, methamphetamine, cocaine, morphine, 6-acetylmorphine, tetrahydrocannabinol, buprenorphine, diazepam and oxazepam, the results confirmed previous observations.

We think that breathalysers with drug testing capabilities would have many positive implications for law enforcement and occupational health and safety professionals, saving costs and time.

But much research still needs to be done as there would be demand for units that can test both alcohol and the various drugs accurately and quickly without costing a fortune. Maintenance will also be tricky as well, as a sensor would need to be calibrated much more often and would require much more technical knowledge.

Australia is known for its drinking culture where alcohol is defined as “an integral part of being Australian”. But the latest poll by FARE (Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education) suggested that drinkers are unaware of the risks of alcohol.

FARE’s research and policy manager Caterina Giorgi says more than half of Australians do not realise alcohol causes cancer. [The Age]

Alcohol is consumed by 81% of Australian adults, with men (85%) more likely to consume than women (77%). Binge-drinking is also becoming an issue in Australia, with 1.7 million Australians reportedly consuming six standard drinks or more on a typical occasion. It was also reported that 36% of drinkers, or about 4.1 million Australians consume alcohol to get drunk [FARE].

No doubt drinking is widely accepted and even embraced in Australia, where it is seen as the norm, but with the rising number of alcohol-related violence and incidents, is Australia in need of better education on responsible drinking?

Are you fully aware of what alcohol does or can do to your body and brain? This infographic gives us an insight into the science of getting drunk -

Should all licensed venues have a bar breathalyser that patrons can use? Independent MP Bob Such thinks they do, and we couldn’t agree more (read the full article on Herald Sun here).

Should all licensed venues have a bar breathalyser that patrons can use? Independent MP Bob Such thinks they do, and we couldn’t agree more (read the full article on Herald Sun here).

Breathalysers should be offered in every licensed venue, especially in Australia where there is a strong drinking culture and unfortunately, a high drink driving fatality rate as well.

Increasing rates of drink driving in Australia

Alcohol causes more road crashes than any other single factor in Australia. One in four fatal car accidents involves drivers or riders who are above the legal BAC limit of 0.05. In some states of Australia these account for one in three fatal crashes.

Despite ongoing national road safety campaigns and increasing random breath testing to curb drink driving, Australians continue to drive intoxicated.

In a survey by AAMI, 1 in 10 (9%) drivers believe it is OK for them to drink and drive after a few drinks, “so long as they feel capable”.

However, it is so difficult to safely determine your BAC after a few drinks that there is a strong need for having wall mounted breathalysers in all licensed venues to reduce drink driving among bar patrons.

Whose responsibility is it?

While the government is constantly introducing new measures and campaigns to curb drink driving, bar patrons and owners should also take the initiative in helping to reduce drink driving incidents.

Bar patrons who plan to drive should either own their own personal breathalyser to test their BAC before driving or test themselves with a bar breathalyser. Ideally, if you plan to drink, you should plan not to drive.

Additionally, licensed venue owners can further enhance their social responsibility and customer care by introducing wall-mounted breathalysers that customers can use to test themselves.

Having a breathalyser in a bar may help deter someone from getting behind the wheel when they’ve had too much to drink.

Joel Smith, who launched a business introducing breathalysers to bars in the US, received positive responses from bar owners:

…just seeing the machine in a bar is a constant reminder to patrons not to drive drunk. “For those that are more responsible with their drinking and actually care about being okay to drive, there is a way to check themselves instead of guessing. How else would you know if you’re under or over the limit?”

Get involved.

With stricter drink driving laws and heavier penalties, a growing number of bar-goers are looking for a reliable way to test their BAC. It’s a service they want and need.

A wall mounted breathalyser in your venue will drive customers through the doors and keep them coming back. Embrace social responsibility and show your customers that you care.

Bar breathalysers have already been implemented in America, Canada and also Australia and it’s time that more venue owners get involved.

Bar breathalysers in the US received mixed reviews on accuracy because the bar breathalysers being used were semiconductor breathalysers, which are less accurate, less reliable and not alcohol-specific.

And while MP Bob Such commented in his interview that breathalysers “cost next to nothing”, a high quality and reliable fuel cell breathalyser will cost up to $3000.

1. Invest in a fuel cell breathalyser

Fuel cell breathalysers are alcohol-specific and more reliable and are the best choice for use in licensed venues to provide accurate BAC readings to patrons. Fuel cell technology is what is being used in police grade breathalysers as well.

View our range of fixed type breathalysers - AlcoSense SoberPoint, AlcoSense SoberPoint II and AlcoSense Bartop

Bar owners can choose either coin-operated breathalysers (that take in $1 or $2) to help minimise costs. Otherwise, a push-button mechanism can also be set for our bar breathalysers.

With fuel cell breathalysers such as the AlcoSense Soberpoint II, bar owners can also minimise costs by offering advertising space on its LCD screen.

2. Educate staff and customers on proper usage

Bar owners and staff must know the proper procedure in using the breathalyser. For example, you should wait at least 20 minutes after your last drink or food intake before taking a test. Many people don’t know this and get a totally wrong BAC reading instead.

3. Maintain regularly

The breathalyser will continue to provide accurate readings if calibrated regularly. For example, the AlcoSense SoberPoint II needs calibration every 1000 tests or 12 months, whichever comes first. Plus, calibration is easy as the SoberPoint II comes with a replaceable sensor module, minimising downtime in between calibrations.

The UNSW Transport and Road Safety Group (TARS) is partnering with Mobileye to study Australian driving behaviours. Road safety organisations in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia are also participating in the study, with around 400 vehicles around Australia to be fitted with the Mobileye units to form “Australia’s first large-scale naturalistic driving study“.

“We are proud to participate in a study that puts driver safety at the top of the agenda of Australia’s policy makers,” said Michael Hirsh from Mobileye.

“Mobileye’s core goal is to help drivers limit accidents and improve road safety,” said Mr Hirsh.

Mobileye offers key road and driver safety features and is invaluable to driver safety and road safety. Perfected after years of heavy research and development, Mobileye’s driver awareness technology has been adopted as a standard safety feature by leading automotive manufacturers including Volvo, BMW and General Motors.

The Mobileye system addresses one of the primary causes of vehicle accidents – driver inattention.

Mobileye is the only comprehensive driver awareness system available for aftermarket installation in Australia and is suitable for cars, vans, buses, trucks and fleet vehicles.

If you’re after the Juicepresso but unsure on what it can do, how it works and how well you will like it, why not hear about it from existing Juicepresso users?

We have compiled a few Juicepresso reviews from Juicepresso users and customers. Read on to learn more about how the Juicepresso cold press juicer compares with other juicers.

Nicole Cunningham (Puraforce Remedies) - Nicole Reviews the Juicepresso Juicer

Nicole is a Homeopathic medicine practitioner with years of clinical experience and an expert in natural health. We heard that Nicole was hosting a Juice Feast and wanted her to test out the Juicepresso to see how it would compare to the other juicers she was using:

The main advantage of this juicer is that it has a large motor and it is slow. The benefit of the slow juicing is that maximum fibre from the fruits and vegetables are extracted and that as it is extracted it is not heated which can denature the nutrients. This makes it a more nutritionally beneficial juice that is made each time you juice.

Slow juicing or cold press juicing is an excellent way to get all the nutrients from fruits and vegetables. That’s why a lot of health enthusiasts prefer cold press juicers like the Juicepresso, the world’s slowest cold press juicer.

Nikki Stokes (mum, vegan) - 11 reasons why I love my new Juicepresso juicer

Nikki covers all the important points a beginner juicer would want to know before buying a juicer with in-depth explanations of how the Juicepresso works, how to clean it, its features, pros and cons, and how it compares to her older juicer. Breaking it up into 11 points, Nikki provides us with her honest thoughts on the Juicepresso:

11 reasons why I love my new Juicepresso juicer:

1. The juice comes out cool
2. There’s no sharp bits
